5K video – Augustan Obelisk from the Circus Maximus, Rome, Italy.
The Augustan Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian obelisk that now stands in the Piazza del Popolo in Rome, Italy. It was originally located in the Circus Maximus, an ancient chariot racing stadium in Rome, and was brought to its current location in the 16th century.
The obelisk was originally commissioned by the Pharaoh Psammetichus II in the 6th century BCE and was later moved to Alexandria by the Romans. It was eventually brought to Rome in 10 BCE by Emperor Augustus and erected in the Circus Maximus as a symbol of his power and triumph over Egypt.
The obelisk is made of red granite and stands at a height of 24 meters (79 feet), including the base and the modern pedestal. The inscriptions on the obelisk refer to the reign of Pharaoh Psammetichus II and the dedication of the obelisk to the sun god Ra.
After its relocation to the Piazza del Popolo, the obelisk was restored and renovated several times. In the 18th century, it was topped with a bronze globe and a cross as part of a Christian conversion effort.
Today, the Augustan Obelisk is a popular tourist attraction in Rome and is considered to be one of the best-preserved ancient obelisks in the city.
