5K video – From pots in the ground to the garden. How to transplant two plants from the same pot into the garden.
In this video, I transplanted two plants of variegated dogwood, Ligustrum Ovalifolium from a single pot into the soil in the garden
Transplanting a plant from a pot to the garden is an essential step in the life cycle of a plant. It helps the plant to grow and thrive in its new environment, provided that the transplant process is carried out correctly. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to transplant a plant from a pot to soil in the garden:
Choose the Right Time to Transplant:
Transplanting a plant should be done when the temperature is mild. Avoid transplanting during the hot weather as this may cause stress to the plant, leading to wilt. Early morning or late afternoon when the temperature is cooler is an excellent time to transplant.
Prepare the Soil:
Dig a hole in the garden soil that is larger than the size of the plant’s root ball. Mix in some organic matter to improve soil quality and provide the plant with the necessary nutrients.
Water the Plant:
Water the plant thoroughly a few hours before transplanting. This helps the soil to stick together and prevents the root ball from falling apart during the transplant process.
Gently Remove the Plant from the Pot:
Turn the pot on its side and gently tap the sides to loosen the soil. Then, carefully lift the plant out of the pot, being careful not to damage the roots.
Inspect the Roots:
Check the roots for any signs of damage or disease. Trim any damaged or broken roots with a sharp, clean pair of scissors.
Place the Plant in the Hole:
Set the plant in the hole at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the surface of the soil.
Backfill with Soil:
Fill in the hole around the plant with soil, gently tamping it down with your fingers. Ensure that the soil is firmly packed around the roots, but not too tightly that it restricts growth.
Water the Plant Again:
Give the plant a good watering to help settle the soil and remove any air pockets around the roots.
Add Mulch:
Add a layer of mulch around the plant to help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds.
By following these simple steps, you can transplant your plant from a pot to soil in the garden, allowing it to grow and thrive in its new environment. With proper care and maintenance, your newly transplanted plant should establish itself in the garden and continue to thrive.
