5K video – From pots to the soil in the garden. How to plant from pots in the garden.
Transplanting plants from pots to garden soil can be a great way to expand your garden and give your plants more room to grow. Here are some steps to follow:
Choose the right time: The best time to transplant your potted plants to the garden is during the cooler months of the year, when the weather is mild and the plants are not under stress. Early spring or fall are usually the best times to transplant.
Prepare the soil: Prepare the garden bed by removing any weeds or rocks, and add organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve soil quality.
Water the plants: Water the plants thoroughly a day or two before transplanting, to help the soil hold together better and to reduce stress on the plant.
Gently remove the plant from the pot: Carefully remove the plant from the pot by gently squeezing the sides of the pot and loosening the soil. If the plant is stuck, tap the sides of the pot or use a trowel to loosen the soil.
Trim the roots: If the roots of the plant are tightly packed or circling around the bottom of the pot, use a sharp knife to make a few shallow cuts along the root ball to encourage the roots to grow outward.
Dig a hole: Dig a hole in the garden bed that is slightly larger than the root ball of the plant.
Place the plant in the hole: Place the plant in the hole, making sure it is at the same depth as it was in the pot. Gently backfill the hole with soil, pressing down lightly to remove any air pockets.
Water the plant: Water the plant thoroughly after planting, to help settle the soil around the roots.
Mulch: Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and control weeds.
Care for the plant: Keep the plant well-watered for the first few weeks after transplanting, and monitor it regularly for signs of stress or disease.
