The mysterious train car from Sinaia station, Romania.
In recent years, travelers who are not in too much of a hurry when passing through the Sinaia railway station, Romania, may notice a somewhat strange apparition: somewhere, on a disused piece of line, a car body makes a discordant note with the railway decoration. From a distance, the vehicle retains a heavy elegance, a vintage scent. The red outlines of the windows accentuate the black, martial color. But if you get closer, the relentless marks of time begin to become visible. The first to show its injuries is the broken windshield on the left side. But the crack itself intrigues and raises new questions because it highlights the thickness of the glass, more than five centimeters. Equally intriguing is the rail chassis on which the limousine sits. Well, yes, this motor coach has a history, mostly still unclear, punctuated here and there with elements of urban legend. A story we think is worth telling…
A prerogative of the communist leaders
The Skoda VOS car was produced in Czechoslovakia between 1949 and 1952. It was designed as a luxury car, built in the spirit of the American limousines of the late 1930s. From the start it was designed as a vehicle for the military and political elites of the communist regimes. Incidentally, the initials VOS come from the Czech abbreviation of “special government car” (Vládní Osobní Speciál). In the three years that this variant was in production, 107 examples were produced. Two of these reached Romania.
Skoda VOS was an armored car right from the initial design. The body was designed by a tank designer. The engine, with six cylinders and a capacity of 5.2 liters, capable of developing a power of 120 horsepower came from the Praga trucks. The vehicle was rear-wheel drive. The total mass, in the standard version, exceeded four tons. The maximum speed was only 80 km/h. The dimensions were 5.7 meters long, 1.9 meters wide and about 1.8 meters high.
Beneficiaries of such machines naturally included Klement Gottwald, leader of the communist party in Czechoslovakia, but also Chinese communist leaders Zhu De and Mao Zedong. The Albanian leader Enver Hoxha is also on the list.
