A medlar plant is a small deciduous tree belonging to the rose family (Rosaceae), scientifically known as Mespilus germanica. It is native to Southwest Asia and southeastern Europe. The medlar tree produces small, white flowers in late spring, which develop into fruit resembling small apples. These fruits are unique in that they are not typically eaten fresh; instead, they are allowed to soften and develop flavor through a process called “bletting,” where they become mushy and brown. Once bletted, the fruit can be eaten raw, cooked into jams or jellies, or used in baking. Medlar fruits have a sweet, tangy flavor reminiscent of spiced apples or figs. The tree itself is often grown for ornamental purposes as well, valued for its attractive flowers and unusual fruits.
